During the month of April, my group has teamed up our school's Student Council to bring awareness to autism. April is the official month for autism awareness. The past couple weeks, my group and I have been working on decorating the front lobby of our school with different things to bring awareness. We started off with coloring puzzle pieces and then hanging them up on the windows. We used the puzzle pattern because it reflects the mystery and complexity of the autism spectrum. We loved what they looked like and decided we wanted to fill more windows with them so we decided to ask all the teachers at the school to have some of their students do them as well. When we collected the pieces, we also got some ribbons that one of the classes decided to do. As we started decorating we were able to fill up two windows with puzzle pieces and a window with the ribbons. We also added a sign that we had people sign their names on at lunch to show all the support our school gives to people with autism. One of my favorite things about this project was seeing everyone's unique puzzle pieces. The different pieces help represent the diversity of the people and families living with the condition. I have really enjoyed being able to work on this project with other members.
